THE TEST DRIVE MEME: MARCH - APRIL

THE TEST DRIVE MEME

SO YOU WANT TO JOIN THE CREEPY HOTEL BRIGADE.
Well, welcome potential apper! Here we have the handy dandy test drive meme so you can get a feel for how your character might react to the game setting. This post can also be used to cultivate some of those required sample threads for the application.

Feel free to play any scenario you so please. However please note that TDM threads cannot be used for Activity Checks (for existing players) and will not be considered game canon unless transposed comment for comment into logs in [community profile] checkingout. We also recommend avoiding playing the initial arrival, so that the intro log doesn't become repetitive and boring for you. Other than that, go wild.

Here's a few additional useful links:

BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS.
No time for losers, because we — have waffles and pancakes and crepes and delicate bowls of ripe bananas and juicy oranges. We have bacon and oatmeal and cereal and milk; we have coffee (that's really hot and will burn you quite spectacularly) and tea (that, on the other hand, is miserably cold and bland). And we have orange juice (that might just kill you)!

Basically, every component one needs to start the day off right. Which is good, because this is the only meal ever served in the hotel. So come one, come all — get it while it's hot and try to pick among seats amidst the crowded circular tables, or stand along the wall. Bemoan the lack of hashbrowns or fight over the last fork. Mix, mingle. Have "fun".

DON'T YOU LOVE MY TASTE IN MUSIC.
What starts as soft, subtle musical notes wafting out of unseen speakers?

Yeah, that quickly manifests into blaring, loud, aggressively high pitched notes — so distorted, and reverberating so magnificently in the main lobby that even those impenetrable windows rattle in their frames.

And what's more, there doesn't seem to be an off switch anywhere in sight. Good luck finding one.

GOING DOWN.
Right by the stairwell in the lobby is an old timey elevator, the sort that really ought to be manned by staff to insure that it's in decent working condition and won't kill you. But it's usually not. And usually doesn't run.

But today, your ears are treated to an oh-so pleasant ding, and the doors will slide open, offering a ride to the floor of your choosing. Finally, no more calf workouts on the stairs, right?

...well, you probably should have taken the stairs, because three seconds in the entire carriage shudders, screeches to a halt, and refuses to move.

Then the lights begin to flicker.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE.
Don't see a scenario that appeals to you here? Make up your own. Get crazy with it! Good luck getting outside.

[She smiled faintly, the scars of her face pulling a bit around her lips. Settling back she took another bite of bacon and shrugged one shoulder.]

The only side I am on is the one that looked after me. That bothered to fix me. I owe a lot to that. If SHIELD picked you up from a place in your life that was missing and helped fill that in, wouldn't you feel indebted to them too?

Or does that not work that way for you?
hacker: (santa isn’t real kids)

[personal profile] hacker 2015-03-26 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
[ It hurts because she does feel that way: that's precisely what SHIELD does for her. They're the family she never had because they picked her up and took her in. Helped her make something of herself, helped her become an agent. ]

That's different. SHIELD's the good guys. If you follow Ward, he's gonna lead you right off the edge of a cliff.

[Her species title is equally unfamiliar, though slightly more unfathomable is the understanding that the minimal level of interest he has thus far expressed appears to be mutual. He has grown too familiar with suspicion and outright hostility as immediate reactions to his general existence. This person - Chiana - largely seems to communicating something else entirely.

Though it is, admittedly, quite difficult to be certain.

Social cues of the terrestrial variation were never his forte, and the additional layer of cultural distance has doubtless complicated matters.

Cultural distance. He isn't fucking Jackson.

He is slightly too taken aback to inflect his next words with their usual amount of calculated indifference.]

Dr. Nicholas Rush.

[It belatedly occurs to him that human titles will likely be entirely lost on the ears of non-terrestrials. He may conclude privately, irritability, again, that he suffers a significant lack of interpersonal skills regarding even the more basic foundations of conversation.]
alifetime: (grin would i lie?)

[personal profile] alifetime 2015-03-26 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
That's what most of us do. They don't seem to care if we walk out with any, and there's small fridges in the rooms so it doesn't go bad. I'd suggest stocking up.

[While he set to cutting apart his breakfast, Jack's gaze wanders over Coulson without the least attempt to not leer. When it comes to who and what he is, Jack is open about it. A man in a suit? Oh yes, please, and thank you.]

[Cleaning his own hands, Jack reaches across the table to gently grip Phil's hand in a shake. There's a dual purpose to such a casual touch on his part, feeling for any callouses that might denote gun or knife use. Men in suits could be dangerous, okay? Ianto was a case in point. Jack's own have wear along the thumb and forefinger, showing long-term use of a gun.]

Captain Jack Harkness. Good to meet you. Must be one of the new arrivals. I think I've already met everyone who looks that good in a tie.
facemyenemies: (Kara Scarred - Tilt Unamused)

[personal profile] facemyenemies 2015-03-26 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
[And that's exactly what Ward has done for her, so it's hard to agree that Skye is the right one here. Sure, it might be a bit brainwashy, but she was already broken before helping Ward out.]

Good and bad is relative to the side your on at the time. I used to think HYDRA was the good guys when I was there, as did everyone who worked for them.

[She pushed her plate away, half finished and leaned back in her seat, looking up at the other from under her hood.] And don't forget, May's the one that did this to me. [she tapped her finger to the scarred face, her own, not anyone else.] Apparently the 'good guys' decided to cut their losses on Agent Thirty-three and left her like this. Left me there for Whitehall to pick up later.
hacker: (seeing a lot of new faces in the crowd)

[personal profile] hacker 2015-03-26 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
They were compromised. She had to make a judgment call after you disabled our ship and attacked her.

[ Brainwashed, yes, but if Kara wants to enter it into evidence, Skye's going to back May up without question. Unfortunately, her lack of self-awareness keeps her from seeing just how alike that unquestioning loyalty is to, well, the scramble for approval of the ex-brainwashed. ]
alifetime: (cheeky grin)

B.

[personal profile] alifetime 2015-03-26 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well, damn.

[The other occupant of the elevator doesn't seem too upset with the stop beyond that small comment. Instead of trying the doors or the ceiling, Jack Harkness settles down on the floor and makes himself comfortable.]

[Only then does his eyes move up to her face, not even sure if he's looking at a man or woman at first but the body says woman even with everything she's wearing.]

Should have figured it would do it again. I'd take a seat if I were you. Got stuck in here once for six hours. As long as you're not claustrophobic, it isn't too bad.
facemyenemies: (Kara Scarred - Glance Back wtf)

[personal profile] facemyenemies 2015-03-26 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
[The man in here with her? Calm. That was nice at least. She looked around, wanting to try butters or the leaver to get it moving again, wanting to find a way out of the shaft. She wasn't claustrophobic, but she didn't like cages.]

[She should never have taken this damned contraption. The stairs are just FINE. Shit.]

[And he was SITTING? She glanced down at him and frowned. Then glanced back to the doors. There had to be something they could do?]

[She hadn't said much yet, still clearly calculating a way out, only to stop after a few minutes and lean back into the back wall. Yes, she was a woman, with her hood up and glasses on, hiding her face. She could switch to a different face, but the only ones working were faces he might have seen, or something that would give her away.]

[With a sigh she moved to slide down the wall, sitting near, head down but glancing over at him.]

What happened last time? Did someone get you out, or did it start again? [Oh! She does speak...]
facemyenemies: testing (Kara Scarred - Trouble)

[personal profile] facemyenemies 2015-03-26 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose I deserved this anyhow.

[she said simply, dismissing the reply with a shrug. Had HYDRA never messed with her brain she would have been all for SHIELD. That was what she was trained to think was the good side anyhow.]

[For Kara, she was loyal to those who treated her right. And for what she remembers HYDRA tried, for a while, but Ward won out. SHIELD was no where to be found other then leaving her a monster]

I'll try my best to stay out of your way while we're here.
alifetime: (come on take a ride)

[personal profile] alifetime 2015-03-26 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
[No one's booty radar is better than Jack's, not to mention his imagination. In a place where there are no outside doors and only one meal a day, imagination cannot be underrated.]

Last time I was trapped in here? No. Of course, it was also snowing, but that could have been due to the evil spirit thing. Or maybe that witch others mentioned. Could have been that wolf the other one said was around. It's hard to tell.

[Jack shrugs, rising up on tiptoe to give the ceiling the once over.]

Nope. Not one here today either. Was hoping there might be. Things change around here.

[And the lights flicker.]

Damn it.

[Though she is by no means a mind reader, Chiana can see that there is much going on behind Nicholas' gaze and any number of unspoken comments. Her head tilts back the other way, smile slipping from her lips only to reappear a moment later almost unconsciously. The number of humans she has actively engaged with can be counted with two fingers, but this one is a curious one. There is a sternness to him that goes unspoken but for the way he carries himself, even seated and jotting down notes on the wall in his curious human script. Even picking that much up, the Nebari is hardly dissuaded from speaking to him.

Hell, after spending more than a few arns with the likes of Aeryn Sun, Nicholas' company was welcome and damn near gentile.

Still, sex was something Chiana understood and in this situation where everything she knew had been tilted sideways and everything familiar and close was gone? She went with what seemed to work among pretty much any male of any species.]

Doctor... [There is a beat. A mere microd where that defensive show of bravado slips. A slight widening of the eyes and a tremble of the lips as her smile slips again, only to be replaced by one warmer and softer than it had been.] Heh. Who'd'a thunk it, huh? A doctor. [Oh, the young Nebari knew doctors quite well. They'd promised her an inoculation before releasing she and her brother from Nebari Prime. An innoculation that had proven to be a contagion she and Nerfi had been wantonly spreading throughout the galaxy. Doctors had come up with the contagion. Doctors had come up with the cleansing and the collar she wore now.

No... Chiana's fearlessness was feigned before a great many things, but doctors were right at the top.

She laughs then, shifting in her crouch a bit as she tries her best to play it cool.]

What... what kinda doctor?

Last time it started snowing. Really was pretty impressive considering it was indoors and warm in here at the time.

[Jack gives her a shrug, taking on a smile as she finally joins him. The fact that he can't see what she looks like matters little to him. This is the man that used to date another one without a mouth and deals with aliens on a daily basis.]

The elevator started running again after about an hour or two. Got out at the first floor it stopped at and didn't look back. I had hoped they had gotten all the bugs worked out this time.

It'll be okay. They'll remember we're here and let us out. I'm Captain Jack Harkness. And you are?

[He holds out a hand to her tentatively. In some species, that's considered an insult.]
lottawork: (glasses man | scientist)

[She is familiar with the title, then. Acquainted enough with the idea of humanity to be aware of it, so perhaps that set of assumptions had been acquired too hastily. There is a careful veneer overlapping something darker, more intensely and uncomfortably visceral, an odd conflict of distance and unreadable propiniquity.]

Mathematics.

[It is a mild relief to bring himself sharply back to well-traversed territory. Numbers, deceptively impersonal, endlessly more decipherable to Rush than the variegated social nuances of which he has very little grasp. Some of his former crispness and cerebral poise returns with the quiet snap of a wrist as he continues writing.]

Cryptography, largely. [Then, in flickering hesitation, he makes a slight, careful addendum.] Wormholes were certainly involved in my latest work.

Snowed? Inside? [Her brow raised at that, head lifted a bit more to look at him, curious. In the flickering lights he'd see little of her still, but she was clearly relaxing more as he spoke]

[Her sunglasses did come off though, folded up and stuffed into the hoodie pocket. It wasn't that she was embarrassed about her appearance, just... not happy about it.]

[To his story about getting out after a few hours, she frowned but nodded. Honestly, she was more used to breaking out of cages then staying in them. For now she would wait.]

Captain? [again, a curious tone.] Were you with the air force or something? [she shouldn't care, but if they were here for a while, she might as well converse a bit. The question of her name came up though. And there was a hand waiting for her. She reached out to take it, giving a firm but not overly so handshake.]

Amelia Hunter. Nice to meet you. [A name she would use until the others knew she was here, or until it got out that she wasn't at all Amelia Hunter. Whoops]

Stupid humans.

[The creature that walks among them makes no effort to hide its voice or temper its annoyance at being surrounded by even more of them. To the human eye, it seems nothing more than a seventeen or eighteen year old male either recovering from or suffering from a long-term illness. Its dark eyes sat in shadowed sockets and its skin was too pale to be healthy.]

I'd swear there's even more of you somehow.

[Annoyed as the Nogitsune might be at more people arriving, it does appreciate an influx of food. There's enough frustration going around this room to feed it for a few days were it not a glutton. Its black eyes slide over Calvin as they do everyone else before it lifts its head and sniffs the air like a dog scenting for the best meal.]

[Given that it feeds on pain, chaos, fear, and all the other ugly things in life, the fox spirit isn't lacking for food.]
mygame: the Fox (the Trickster stories are all about food)

[personal profile] mygame 2015-03-26 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
Even more of you humans. At least I won't starve around here. I suppose I should be glad for that.

[The Nogitsune cuts through the crowd with little care of what the humans milling about for food think or want. It isn't the most impressive person to see or study, but it can't bring itself to care. Right and wrong aren't values it has or understands. What it does get is that a new rush of food has arrived. For a creature that feeds on fear, anger, pain, frustration and all the other 'darker' emotions, new arrival day is always a good day.]

[It looks about the room, eyes touching on Connor briefly before moving on. The piles of regular food are ignored as it sniffs the air like a dog casting about for a scent that would lead it to someone suffering. Or angry. Or hateful. Or anything the creature could draw from them.]

Going to be very disappointed if no one came here without catastrophic injuries, [it mutters to itself.]

[when you're already freaked out and hyper-attuned to pretty much everything going on as a result, it's hard to miss the sight of someone sniffing around (literally) like that. sure, there were weird people in the world but this guy looked like this was a level above and beyond and he's starting to wonder if he shouldn't put anything outside the realm of possibility at this point.

at least the Nogitsune will find everything he's looking for in connor. since the night of the murder, his anxiety had been through the roof. he hadn't had another panic attack like that, thank god, but part of him was starting to wonder if Oliver, and latching himself onto him, wasn't the only thing keeping him safe. That lifeline had been abruptly cut off when he'd shown up here and it made it three hundred times worse and more frustrating knowing what he'd been so close to having and then having it slide through his grip. he'd almost had it together, he'd almost been able to put his life back in the way he wanted it to and now --

now, he was stuck here. with only his thoughts and his self-loathing and guilt - guilt for being there, guilt for fucking up with oliver, guilt for the whole mess everything had been since he started with annalise, did it matter? - and the creepy atmosphere did nothing to help get away from his darker thoughts. oh, and, yeah, of course the luggage was unlocked with the date of the murder which was its own sick, twisted, horrifying thing.

so yeah, he didn't really have it together in the slightest. and the nogitsune wandering around acting generally creepy wasn't helping at all.]

she was sort of expecting the getting stuck part, too. it's the hotel, you learn to expect the very worst. her company apparently doesn't know.]

it's giving her a real headache.

[A quiet snort, coupled with a disgruntled, bracing pronation of a palm against the wall, are the unmistakeable indications of Rush's displeasure at having his current mental orbit disrupted.

It has not yet become clear to him whether this particular disturbance is worth dividing his attention. He wavers, pen tip still frozen in suspended indecision against the wall, as Rush skewers the interruption with a look of wary disdain.]

'Magic' falls somewhat beyond an easily classifiable nature. [Obviously. Annoyingly. A simple concept, such like 'fate,' yet altogether too broad in its scope. Infuriating, overarching, a category refusing to be categorized. It's become quite clear to him that it is something of a fundamental aspect to some of the 'guests' here - questionable semantics aside - and warrants a modicum of reluctant, due consideration.
